A couple of weeks ago we were asked if our products contained manuka or normal honey.
So for those of you who aren't sure....
You will probably have heard about manuka honey and its marvellous properties. However, buying local honey is just as good. In New Zealand no-one would buy manuka due to its unpleasant taste and where it was often referred to as axle grease. Someone discovered that its antibacterial qualities were a bit higher than in other honey and the marketing machine went into overdrive. You will pay extortionate prices for manuka but according to New Zealand's leading manuka association, 1,800 tonnes a year of the honey are now consumed in the UK each year, out of an estimated 10,000 tonnes globally. Yet production of the genuine stuff is set at just 1,700 tonnes. Unless Britain has somehow managed to secure all of it, there's a lot of fake manuka on our shelves.
We only use locally produced honey from our own hives.
